A new grooming service based in Southwater is ready to make your dog feel as special as you know them to be.

Paw Amore Southwater, run by long-time dog lover and owner Jenny Whitton, prides itself not just on how it’s service makes your dog look, but how it makes them feel. After all, as part of the family, there’s nothing more important than helping your dog to feel their best.

“We always had dogs in our house growing up, usually one or two big Alsatians,” Jenny remembers fondly. “Now I’ve got two Jack Russells – Jazz and Hanny – who are almost completely human, except that they can’t talk!”

“Dogs are amazing animals; they are just great characters, and we all know how much they add to your family.”

Jenny offers all kinds of care for your dog, from just a nail trim or simple “wash and go” to breed standard grooms using only the best products and equipmentJenny offers all kinds of care for your dog, from just a nail trim or simple “wash and go” to breed standard grooms using only the best products and equipment

Jenny’s business, Paw Amore Southwater, is a new one this year, after she was struck by inspiration when she lost her job in the midst of the pandemic. It’s now become the best decision she ever made.

“When I lost my job at the beginning of the pandemic, I didn’t know which way to turn, but then one morning I had an epiphany; my dogs came in to the room and I thought, ‘You guys really need a groom!’ and that’s how the idea was born. I completely re-trained, by first completing an intermediate grooming course and then taking it to the next level with in-depth training at a specialist dog grooming academy in Portsmouth. This gave me the knowledge and confidence to follow my dream and open up my studio. Once I had my website and Facebook page up and running, it was easy for people to get in touch with me.”

Jenny offers all kinds of care for your dog, from just a nail trim or simple “wash and go” to breed standard grooms using only the best products and equipment. With her business located at her home, she is also able to board dogs (only one at the time unless they are from the same household), making them part of the family until you return.

“My studio really is top-notch,” Jenny states proudly. I offer one-to-one service within a relaxed, quiet, and air-conditioned environment with outside space available for the dogs to potter before and after their appointments. It’s important not to rush and have to get the dogs in and out on a conveyor belt, because that causes stress to them, too. Giving them that time and attention they need is paramount. It is crate free and I can give the dog a break during grooming in my garden if they need it”

Just as it has been for their owners, it has indeed been a stressful time for dogs during the pandemic. As such, Jenny offers some advice on the secret to a happy dog.

“The secret is that love works both ways – you have to give your love to a dog to be loved back,” she explains. “Dogs are the most amazing pets, they really are, because they’re loyal and their love is unconditional, but you have to give that to deserve it back from them.”

“That’s where the grooming comes in, too. I know it’s a very 21st century thing to have your dog groomed, but it’s not just vanity. Whether your dog is short haired, long haired, curly coated or mix – they all need to be groomed. That’s why groomers use their knowledge and different techniques to keep your dogs skin and in coat top condition, nails trimmed, and ears cleaned otherwise it is a really uncomfortable feeling for your trusted companion.

“When you have your dog groomed, you’re really looking after them, their wellbeing and happiness. Dogs can’t communicate with you in quite the same way that a person can, so it’s a big part of developing their trust and understanding.”
