Eastbourne and Willingdon MP Caroline Ansell has stepped down from her role as a borough councillor.

She handed in her resignation to the council today.

The MP explained it was now time to hand over to someone else ahead of a busy legislative schedule in Westminster, increased work by her to support Eastbourne’s post-Covid economic recovery and the move back to attending parliament in person as lockdown restrictions ease.

“It’s been an honour to be the borough councillor for Sovereign Ward these last two years and as the town’s MP,” she said.

“I will of course continue to represent residents in this area, especially in regards to the cladding and unsafe building issues which many face.

“For my part, I am also keen to open up opportunities for new people to get involved in the good governance of Eastbourne and there are a number of excellent prospective Conservative candidates with skills and significant experience to do just.”

Robert Smart, Conservative Group leader, added: “Caroline has made a significant contribution on Eastbourne Borough Council. She will continue her excellent work as our town’s MP, and we can rely on her to stand up for everyone across the constituency.”
